At Northern, college preparatory means way beyond the getting enough credit, building an impressive list of co-curricular activities and community service, acing the SAT/ACT, crafting a good college application and resume, and getting into a good college. These are just pieces of the high school journey. More importantly, we guide our students to establish a humble yet lofty moral compass that drives long-term success.
At Northern, we nurture humility, gratitude, diligence, and a deep curiosity to explore and discover. Through this intentional development, our students grow into independent thinkers and lifelong learners— and as a natural result, they excel academically. Whether maintaining an average AP score of 4+ across a wide range of subjects or achieving an average SAT score above the 90th percentile nationally, these accomplishments are not the focus but rather the byproduct of their growth mindset and intrinsic motivation.
In the past century, youth-driven movements have shaped global history, most notably with the rise of communist regimes in Russia, China, and Cuba. These movements often exploited youthful idealism, using media and schools for influence and indoctrination, resulting in widespread poverty and loss of lives. Even today, the manipulation of youth activism as a political force persists. At Northern, we don’t encourage students to change the world through social activism but to embody virtue, excellence, and tranquility as a way of life. Genuine learning—not activism—is our focus, where cognitive skills and academic success naturally emerge from deep intellectual exploration and a rich academic foundation.
Guided by Confucian and Socratic philosophies, our classical education model emphasizes virtue before political ideology. Character education is woven into every aspect of learning, fostering introspection, altruism, and resilience. Through engagement with literature, mathematics, science, and the arts, students develop sharp analytical skills and a deep appreciation for knowledge. They investigate original documents, engage in debate, apply logical reasoning, and build a solid classical arts foundation. Rather than politicizing topics like environmental science and renewable energy, we approach them as fields of genuine scientific inquiry, allowing students to think critically and form their own perspectives.
We aspire for our students to become future leaders and innovators—but, more importantly, to be a force of goodness for society.
Classical Roots: At Northern Academy, we draw from the best of the past to nourish the future, embracing a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western classical education. Rooted in Confucius’ The Great Learning and the Western traditions of the Trivium and Quadrivium, our approach fosters both wisdom and intellectual depth. We cultivate a deep respect for tradition while preparing students to meet the challenges of the modern world with clarity, creativity, and virtue.
Character Building: We believe that true education goes beyond acquiring knowledge—it is about shaping character and understanding the wisdom of those who came before us. Our students engage with primary sources and living books, study classical literature, and explore the arts through the lens of historical and philosophical traditions. From the Confucian pursuit of self-cultivation to the Socratic method of inquiry, we emphasize learning that is both rigorous and reflective. By introducing students to the lives and achievements of ancient and modern heroes, we inspire them to strive for greatness and contribute meaningfully to society.
Scientific Wonder: Northern Academy’s classical approach also extends to the sciences, where we encourage exploration driven by wonder and a desire to uncover the beauty and intricacy of the natural world. Our students learn to see scientific discovery not merely as a tool for progress but as a way to elevate the human spirit and advance technological innovation in service of a richer, more meaningful human experience.
Refined Living: Our curriculum places high value on personal conduct and physical well-being through dedicated instruction in etiquette and health. Students master the art of professional and personal deportment—ranging from the grace of ballroom dance and formal tea service to the nuances of fine dining—ensuring they carry themselves with confidence in any setting. This is complemented by a holistic approach to health that views human growth through the lens of both modern science and traditional ethics, teaching students to care for their bodies and minds as interconnected vessels of virtue.
Future Path: By honoring timeless traditions in language, literature, music, art, science, etiquette, and health education, we offer students a path forward—one that cultivates intellectual excellence, moral clarity, and a deep appreciation for the foundations of civilization. In doing so, we prepare them not just for academic success, but for a life of purpose, integrity, and contribution to the greater good.
